Week 4 College Football Trends

Scott Morris | September 28, 2015

Week 4 of college football is in the books. Last week straight up wagers were 51-8 in favor of favorites while against the spread it was 33-25-1.

On a home and away look, the games ended 36-23 SU in favor of the home team and 20-38-1 ATS. The Over/Under finished the weekend 21-27-3.

The largest underdog at +10 to win outright was East Carolina 35-28 over Virginia Tech. The largest favorite to cover was Baylor -33 in their 70-17 win over Rice.

In the top 10, everything went as planned and most everyone in the entire top 25 won when predicted to do so.

That almost did not happen for TCU as the Horned Frogs needed heroics late in the game to hold Texas Tech off in a 55-52 shootout.

Following TCU’s last win at the end of the game, teams in the Top 10 were 9-0 SU but just 3-6 ATS. The three teams in the Top 10 that covered were Baylor -33 against Rice, Notre Dame -28.5 against UMass and UCLA at -1 versus Arizona.

One of the weekend’s most shocking games was in Eugene, Oregon when a matchup that on paper looked close with Utah +10 ended up far from close as the Utes scored 28 points during the third quarter to stun the Ducks 62-20 and serve notice upon the rest of the Pac-12 that Utah is for real.

Georgia Tech had a strong offense after two weeks, but lost to Notre Dame in week 2 and was beaten this past Saturday by Duke +7.5 by the score of 34-20.

Despite a number of injuries to key players, Notre Dame looks fine after drubbing UMass 62-27. The Irish have averaged 46 points per game. Notre Dame is 3-1 ATS heading into their weekend game versus Clemson.

Georgia routed Southern, a FCS team, in its last game before Saturday’s meeting with Alabama.

Ole Miss played as if it had a hangover from its win over Alabama as the Rebels only scored 27 points versus Vanderbilt after scoring 43 or more in each of their previous three games that included covers and overs in each. The Rebels never came close to covering as 27-point chalk and never threatened on the OVER, but ended up winning outright nonetheless.
