Bowl Game Free Picks for December, 28

There are a couple of games I am looking at tomorrow that have intrigued me. What better way to investigate them than to write a quick preview and pick for the SBA readers.

Game #1 is Virginia vs. Navy

The oddsmakers have Virginia the very slightest of favorites here at Virginia -1 and the total is 52. Virginia started the season 5-1 before losing 5 of their last 6 games. It Was unfortunate but the heavy part of their schedule was backladen. They beat some good teams this year: Duke, Boise State and Georgia Tech, so they are not a cream-puff.

Navy had a very substandard year and didn’t really beat anyone of significance. To top it off they lost to rival ARMY in their last game and have to be feeling pretty low about now.

Both teams are 6-6. Both teams dropped a ton of games late. My lean here is on Virginia however, them having beat better teams this season and playing in one of the big five conferences. The talent level is just a bit higher for Virginia and they should be able to pull off the win.

Game #2 Stanford vs. TCU

This should be a great one to watch if you like hard hitting football. This is really one of the better matchups of bowl season. TCU is favored by 3 and the total is 49.

Stanford is 9-4 and 6-6-1 ATS. TCU is 10-3 and 7-6 ATS. TCU scores more points on offense (34 to Stanford’s 32) and allows less points on defense (15 to Stanford’s 20). Head to head TCU owns Stanford 2-0 (1-1) ATS.

Both teams are coming off losses. Stanford lost a very close one to USC (31-28) and TCU got smacked up by Oklahoma 41-17. Both teams will try to establish the run early. TCU has a great run defense that has only allowed 90 YPG this season. The teams match up so well it is really hard to see a clear cut angle here. The TCU defensensive advantage is the reason why they are favored by 3. If you have to bet the side I would say take Stanford and buy the hook. But my pick is THE OVER 49. I can see both of these teams getting into the 30+ point range. Expect some big gains from plays installed just for this game. Both coaching staffs have installed them.
