Heisman Update: Haskins Trying to Keep Pace with Tagovailoa

Scott Morris | October 10, 2018

College football’s regular season is already more than half over and the Heisman Trophy race appears to be between two quarterbacks.

Alabama Crimson Tide signal caller Tua Tagovailoa is the -150 favorite and continues to have an incredibly productive season even though he has not played a single down during the fourth quarter this season.

Trying to keep pace is Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins who currently is a distant second at +450, even though his numbers are outstanding to this point of the season.

Rounding out the top five on the futures board for the most coveted individual prize in college football is West Virginia’s Will Grier at +650, Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray at +700 and  Penn State’s Trace McSorley and Central Florida’s McKenzie Milton both at +1200.

Alabama has just six regular season games remaining and Tagovailoa has started to separate from the rest of the pack. The lefthander has thrown for 1,495 yards, 18 touchdowns and no interceptions.

Those stats are very impressive for any quarterback but when you consider Tagovailoa has missed six quarters of action by not playing in any of Alabama’s fourth quarters, the stats jump off the paper.

The remaining schedule for Alabama is very favorable with the biggest obstacle an early November game on the road in Death Valley versus LSU. The annual Iron Bowl against Auburn is on November 21 but at home this year and closes out the team’s regular season.

Ohio State’s Haskins has leapfrogged Oklahoma’s Murray and taken over the second best odds to win the Heisman. Haskins put up another impressive performance on the board in Ohio State’s 49-26 win over Indiana. The Buckeyes signal caller threw for 455 yards with six touchdowns.

The sophomore has 1,919 yards passing, which is the third highest in college football, with 25 touchdowns passes, which tops the nation. Haskins has thrown just four interceptions.

Ohio State’s schedule has been much tougher than that of Alabama. The Buckeyes have already defeated TCU and Penn State with both opponents currently in the top 20. Ohio State’s remaining schedule includes one major game when they face Michigan currently ranked No. 12 at the end of their regular season.

While Tagovailoa and Haskins seem to have turned the Heisman race into a two-player showdown, one poor performance and loss coupled with a fine performances and wins by the other contenders would shuffle the standings from top to bottom.
