The Usual Suspects are Favored to Win the World Series in 2024

January 19, 2024
Dodgers Kershaw

The 120th playing of the World Series of baseball takes place this year and odds have been released as to which teams are favored to win it all. The top of the list is replete with the usual contenders, and in fact you can use this formula to predict which teams will be favored every year: Dodgers, Yankees, Braves, Astros, and whichever team won the last world series.

That’s right folks, you aren’t having dejavu. The Dodgers, Yankees and Braves are the top three favorites to win it all again. The Rangers, fresh off their first World Series win, are numero quatro, and the ‘Stros make it five.

The Dodgers added some real firepower by picking up star player Shohei Ohtani this offseason. LA added star pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto with a 12-year $325M contract. Ace Clayton Kershaw will be 36 this year but is still playing lights out. He posted a 13-5 record and a dazzling 2.46 ERA in 2023.  LAD also added RHP Tyler Glasnow from the Rays who went 26-11 over the last five years. These additions to a team that won a hundred games last season should put them over the top. That is why they are heavy favorites this year. But, the Dodgers have been heavy favorites before and walked away with nothing.

Speaking of walking away with nothing: The Yankees haven’t won a World Series in 15 years and managed to win just 82 last year and miss the playoffs entirely. It looks like they are going to run it back with most of the same players in 2024. They signed pitcher Marcus Stroman who is really just an overpaid mediocre pitcher. His record of 16-16 over the last two season with the Cubs proves just that.
