Will Any NFL Team Go Undefeated or Winless in 2024?

April 29, 2024
Will any team go undefeated in 2024 nfl?

The NFL draft has come and go. There were a few headlines. Such as: Why did the Falcons draft Michael Penix Jr. when they just paid a guap for Kirk Cousins? It was definitely a headscratcher. But who knows, maybe it will work out for them.

It’s safe to say that NFL parity is as good as it has ever been. The league system of salary caps and the distribution of high draft picks to the worst teams from the year works. Yes, it is true that the Chiefs seem to be dominating the league right now and it was the Patriots did so before them. But, there are plenty of viable teams who can win the Super Bowl every year. For example, the Eagles would have won two years ago if not for a controversial interference call. And the 49ers lost in OT to the Chiefs just a few months ago in Super Bowl 58.

Because of parity, it is almost impossible for a team to go undefeated in the regular season. The Dolphins of 1972 and the Patriots in 2007 are the only two teams to go undefeated in the regular season in the Super Bowl era.

Going winless is almost as hard but not quite. Most recently, the 2017 Cleveland Browns didn’t win a game. Before them were the 2008 Detroit Lions. The strike shortened season of 1982 saw the Baltimore Colts go 0-8-1. And the Tampa Bay expansion team of 1976 went 0-14. That is all she wrote for winless teams in the Super Bowl era.

So, to recap you had two teams go undefeated in the regular season in the 58 years of the Super Bowl era. And you have had four teams go winless in the regular season.

It is said that there is less than a 5% chance that a team will go undefeated in the regular season. That applies to going winless as well.

Naturally, the teams favored to win the Super Bowl have the best chance to go undefeated, simply because they are the best teams. The Chiefs and the 49ers are both tied for the shortest odds to win Super Bowl 59 at +600 according to BetUS.com

The Ravens are +900 and both the Bengals and Bills are +1400. Of all these teams, perhaps the Bills have the best shot to go undefeated. They own Miami and who knows what the Jets will be able to do with 40 year old QB Aaron Rodgers. The Patriots suck again. So, this may be 6 wins right off the bat for the Bills.

Speaking of the Patriots, there may very well be the team with the best shot to go winless. They let go of Hall of Famer coach Bill Belichick. Their QB depth chart is terrible:

QB1: Jacoby Brissett
QB2: Drake Maye (Rookie)
QB3: Bailey Zappe
QB4: Nathan Rourke
QB5: Joe Milton

The three teams with the worst total-wins Over/Under according to BetOnline.ag are the Patriots, the Panthers and the Broncos, all with an over-under of 5.5 wins.
