What’s Next for Khalil Rountree Jr.?

Thirty-five-year-old American Khalil Rountree Jr. competes in the UFC light heavyweight division, ranked in the top 5 currently. With a backstory arguably as compelling as any mixed martial artist, he has amassed a legion of fans. 

Rountree (see resume below) turned in a dominating performance in his last bout, whipping Jamahal Hill (with two knockdowns) via unanimous decision at a Fight Night card in Azerbaijan. 

Lefthander Rountree, a native of Los Angeles, has won six of his last seven, but whether that’s sufficient to earn a title shot against current champion Magomed Ankalaev remains to be seen.

Rountree lost to then-champ Alex Pereira in his previous fight. 

In fact, as of this late-June writing, UFC fight odds do not include Rountree.

The Khalil Rountree UFC fights ledger is 15 wins and six losses (one ‘no contest’), the defeats against Alex Pereira (UFC 307), Marcin Prachnio (UFC 257), Ion Cutelaba (Fight Night), Johnny Walker (Fight Night), Tyson Pedro (Fight Night), and Andrew Sanchez (Ultimate Fighter).

He lost to Michal Oleksiejczuk (UFC 219), but a subsequent positive test by Oleksiejczuk turned that bout into the aforementioned ‘no contest’.

We’re delinquent if we don’t mention that Khalil Rountree Jr. was once a whole lot heavier, tipping the scales at more than 300 pounds in his late teens. Then, after a strict diet and much Muay Thai (martial arts) training, he dropped more than 100 pounds over the course of 11 months. Rountree eschewed any injection or diet pills and has said the weight loss improved his self-confidence as well.
