2025 Texas Longhorns Football Preview

The 2025 edition Longhorns football has fans of this team toked. They come in ranked #1 in the nation in the AP poll and their star QB is the odds-on favorite to win the Heisman Trophy (+650 at sportsbetting sportsbook). But is all the hype and #1 ranking warranted?
The Longhorns return 11 starters from the previous season. They return 3 on offense, 6 on defense, and 2 on special teams. A couple portal transfers are expected to get starts as well. You can see a full list of expected starters here.
Texas is favored to win the national championship at the moment at +600 odds. They will have a chance to put these pre-season expectations to the test right off the bat when they play at Ohio State in game 1 (August 30th). Just 7 months ago, Ohio State beat Texas in the semi-finals (28-14) in last season’s playoffs before going on to win it all.
Currently, Ohio State is favored -2.5 points on our live odds page. Ohio State is ranked #3 overall but will be playing without a handful of last year’s stars. Most noticeably absent is QB Will Howard who now plays for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Texas is going to be a great team this season. But to me, expectations may be a little too optimistic. Afterall, their starting QB has only 95 passes in his 2 year college career. I get that he is from the Manning bloodline and that says a lot, but he is still unproven on the field, the only place it really matters.
I can see Texas losing a few games this season, ones that they should win. At Georgia, vs Arkansas and vs Texas A&M are the ones which stick out to me as having upset potential. Still, if they finish the regular season 10-2 and make it into the post-season all bets are off. They could win the entire thing but will have to get through more seasoned teams like Penn State first.
Whatever the outcome this season, if Arch Manning comes back next year, you can bet you will see Texas as #1 overall favorites again. My money this year is on Penn State winning it all. Texas will be very good but perhaps not quite ready for a national title.

Texas National Championship History
The Texas Longhorns have claimed four national championships in football: 1963, 1969, 1970, and 2005. In 1963, they went 11-0 under coach Darrell Royal, defeating Navy 28-6 in the Cotton Bowl. The 1969 team, also led by Royal, finished 11-0, beating Notre Dame 21-17 in the Cotton Bowl. In 1970, despite a 10-1 record and a Cotton Bowl loss to Notre Dame, Texas was awarded the title by the UPI poll. The most recent championship came in 2005 under Mack Brown, with a 13-0 record capped by a 41-38 Rose Bowl win over USC, led by Vince Young.
