Are Injuries Dooming the San Francisco 49ers?

Matt Dominique | September 17, 2025
Purdy injury

Take another gander at the headline. This isn’t what the San Francisco 49ers and their faithful want to read one week into the 2025 NFL season

It’s a fair question, however. The second Sunday of the 17-game season finds the Niners inside the Superdome, about a field-goal favorite over the New Orleans Saints in NFL game odds.

It’s another San Francisco road test after a costly (more about that in a minute) 17-13 victory over the Seattle Seahawks to begin the season. Meanwhile, the Saints remain home after a  20-13 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

There’s no disrespect, but the focus here isn’t on the Saints (perhaps another time).

‘Niner injuries’ is a popular search, and unfortunately, a crowded one entering the second week.

Start with the focal point of any team, the quarterback.

Brock Purdy did throw the game-winning score against the ‘Hawks in the final minutes, though the overall line (including two touchdown passes and two interceptions) was not consistent.

He did play through both an injured left shoulder and an injured toe, the latter being the one that could see him holding a clipboard over the next few weeks. Hardly the way to have Purdy begin a five-year, $265 million contract.

Note that San Francisco lost both games (badly) without Purdy last season.

If not Purdy, then ex-New England Patriot and Jacksonville Jaguar Mac Jones would get the nod against NOLA and perhaps into the next few weeks.

Then, there’s star tight end George Kittle, on injured reserve and out for at least four weeks with an injured hamstring,

It wouldn’t be an injury report with do-it-all Christian McCaffrey, whose nagging calf always seems to be an issue.

Along with Purdy, Kittle and McCaffrey were both solid contributors in the win over Seattle, McCaffrey finishing with 31 ‘touches.’

Add in wideout Jauan Jennings (shoulder) and long-time offensive line stalwart Trent Williams (knee) to the wounded list,

As far as Super Bowl odds are concerned, it’s the Niners at 20-1 (+2000) as of this writing, which may be an investment worth making provided you surmise this team can get healthy sooner rather than later.

If you’re considering making any wager on a game involving the Niners, look to NFL news and see who’s in and who’s out.

Again, the regular season is a marathon and not a sprint, but those key personnel finding their way onto the injury report (if not the sideline) is not the ideal way by the Bay

At least the Niners’ NFL schedule evens out a bit, since after visiting the Saints, there are two home games (Cardinals and Jaguars). We won’t mention that four of the five are back on the road.

Those injuries could well have the Niners as sort of hit and miss in NFL scores, but if they can come out ahead in this very winnable game at NOLA, then a 2-0 record would ease the pain substantially.

How Many Super Bowls Have the San Francisco 49ers Won?

It’s five San Francisco 49er titles in the Super Bowl era, winning in Games XVI, XIX, XXIII, XXIV, and XXIX. They’ve lost their last three trips to the championship game, however.

Does BetUS Offer Constant Updates on Super Bowl LX Betting Odds?

Indeed, it does, since nothing drives the gambling bus in nearly the way it’s driven by the NFL. BetUS is offering a plethora of NFL game odds (point spreads and props) through the 17-game regular season and conference playoffs. It concludes with Super Bowl LX betting lines.

It’s the Green Bay Packers, Baltimore Ravens, and Buffalo Bills each tri-favored at 13-2 (+650) at this early-September writing.

Remember, the board is fluid, so the best advice is always to do your homework to try and strike when the iron is hot in betting odds.

Any Final Thoughts?

NFL rumors are a never-ending entity if you’re a bettor or fan, and the injury caravan of the San Francisco 49ers is a favorite subject at least through the early portion of the season.
