The NFL Season Is In Full Swing: How Is 2025’s Comparing To Years Past?

Samuel Smith | September 19, 2025
nfl 2025 wrap up

The NFL 2025/26 season may only just have got started but it is already giving a good indication of how the season will play out. Perhaps the biggest surprise is that Chiefs have lost their opening two matches, after losing to the Chargers and the Eagles. The Super Bowl runners-up only lost two games in the entire 2024/25 league, so the losses have understandably caused concern for Chiefs fans and players alike.

The Chiefs and Lions were the only teams to register 15 wins in the standard season last time around, but it was the Eagles that hit their stride when it mattered, defeating the Chiefs with a dominant 40-22 victory in the Super Bowl.

The 2025 Super Bowl became the most viewed broadcast in American history, attracting 127.7 million viewers. However, the game itself did not match the excitement and nowhere near as memorable as Super Bowl XLII when underdogs the Giants stole the match with 35 seconds remaining on the clock.

The promise of a more exciting season has started to form into a reality, with Week 1 seeing some thrilling results such as the high-scoring 41-40 game between Bills and Ravens, with the Bills coming out on top.

Week 2 was a weekend filled with last-minute wins, with the Cowboys, Colts and Bengals all leaving it late and adding to the excitement. Meanwhile, there was hardly a quiet moment in the game between the Lions and Bears with a whopping 73 points scored (52-21). Interestingly, the Lions also achieved the highest team game score of 52 in the previous season.

The Cowboys 40-37 win over Giants was wrapped up in dramatic fashion, with an OT winner   after an enthralling fourth quarter that saw a combined 41 points scored. As if that wasn’t remarkable enough, the final 52 seconds of regulation saw 17 points scored.

Adding to some of the NFL drama, offensive coordinator Ben Johnson switched from Detroit Lions to the Chicago Bears, with the two teams lining up against each other in Week 2.

The big match up of the season so far was a repeat of the Super Bowl 2025, with the Chiefs taking on the Eagles just a few months after their disappointing SB performance. The Eagles came out on top again, with a 20-17 defeat leaving Chiefs with two losses from two.

There have been some notable injuries early on in the season too, with Joe Burrows succumbing to a toe injury to leave the Cincinnati Bengals pondering how to cover the QB. Chiefs lost Xavier Worthy to a dislocated shoulder, which was inflicted in a collision with his teammate Travis Kelce.

Who did the experts back for the 2025/26 SB LX?

The majority of Fox Sports staff predicted that the Buffalo Bills would win the SB LX, while there were a few backing the Baltimore Ravens.

Tom Brady shared his power rankings after Week 2, placing the Philadelphia Eagles in 1st place, followed by the Buffalo Bills and the Green Bay Packers.

However, ESPN’s power rankings placed the Buffalo Bills in the top-ranking position, with Eagles 2nd and Green Bay Packers in 3rd.

Bookmakers odds for the Super Bowl LX

Before the season started, the bookmakers had the Eagles as favorites to top the NFC and the Buffalo Bills as winners of the AFC title.

Two games in, the odds have shifted with many bookmakers now making Baltimore Ravens the favorites to be Super Bowl Winners. Some NFL odds for Ravens to win are as low as 9-2, with Buffalo Bills at around 5-1, Green Bay Packers 6-1 and the Eagles 13-2.

A lot can change throughout the course of the season, after all, three teams have started the season with a 0-2 and gone on to win the Super Bowl. Those teams were the 1993 Cowboys, the 2001 Patriots and the 2007 Giants.

For teams like the Chiefs, starting with a 0-2 doesn’t completely rule out their chances of getting to the play-offs but history shows that only 3 out of 96 teams that opened with 3 straight losses made it through to the play-offs.

It is still very early to compare the 2025 NFL season to previous years, but the first two weeks of games have certainly had some incredible moments. With plenty of rule changes also coming into the mix, NFL fans have plenty to look forward to, unless of course, their team is failing to live up to expectations.

It’s a long way to go until SB XL but this season is certainly shaping up to be one filled with twists and turns, and no doubt plenty of upsets to come.
