5 Possible Landing Spots for Ja Morant
Ja Morant is a 26-year-old point guard with the Memphis Grizzlies of the National Basketball Association. In his seventh season, the former Murray St. Racer and second overall burst on the scene as Rookie of the Year in 2019-20. He then added to his resume with a pair of All-Star selections (2021-22 and ‘22-’23), averaging (career-high 27.4) and 26.2 points per game, respectively.
Morant had become the face of the franchise in Memphis, leading a team that was a chic NBA odds choice to perhaps win it all, the team made the playoffs four of the past five seasons, with a second-round appearance in 2022.
It hasn’t been smooth sailing, however, Morant was given a pair of suspensions by the league in 2023, with both involving firearms (real or ‘finger’). There were also suspensions after confrontations with his coach, along with fines due to ‘conduct detrimental to the league.’
Morant’s worst scoring average of his career thus far in 2025-26 has not helped. Add in the fact that Memphis has lost eight of its first dozen games as of this mid-November writing, currently sitting third in the Southwest Division in NBA standings.
This hasn’t done anything to quell the speculation that Morant and the Griz are about to separate shortly. If that’s true, the Miami Heat are the current 4-1 (+400) favorites to be his next team. Then, it’s the Brooklyn Nets at 5-1 (+500), the Houston Rockets at 6-1 (+600).
If you believe the scuttlebutt, the Sacramento Kings, Charlotte Hornets, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Toronto Raptors are also part of the sweepstakes.
Morant, at least publicly, has been taking the high road this season, saying he’s committed to remaining in Memphis. NBA expert picks seem to be hedging their bets as to whether Morant and Memphis do indeed have irreconcilable differences
Here’s a bit of a primer on the subject of Ja Morant and the Memphis Grizzlies…
What is Going On with Ja Morant?
It’s too early in the 2025-26 NBA schedule to suggest the Memphis Grizzlies won’t make the NBA playoffs this season, but the discontent and disconnect (whether it’s actual or perceived) with the team and Ja Morant is a saga that’s not ending soon. Finnish coach Tuomas Iisalo, in his first full season at the controls with the team, has butted heads with Morant over playing time and strategy, the team issuing a one-game NBA game (‘conduct detrimental’) suspension.
Was Ja Morant Traded?
Nope, at least not as of this writing. As was mentioned, if Ja Morant leaves Memphis, the Miami Heat are the current 4-1 (+400) favorites to be his new venue. Then, it’s the Brooklyn Nets at 5-1 (+500), the Houston Rockets at 6-1 (+600), according to NBA player next team odds.
What Team Does Ja Morant Play For in 2025?
Currently, it’s the Memphis Grizzlies, but NBA odds have a sort of cottage industry on whether Ja Morant is traded. As a point of reference, the NBA trade deadline this season is Feb. 26th.
Any Final Thoughts?
Ja Morant of the Memphis Grizzlies has made as much news off the court as on it. That alone should explain why he may be headed out of town. Bettors are advised to keep abreast of the latest developments. NBA scores this season have regularly seen the Griz on the losing end.
