What the Lions’ Christmas Loss Changed in the NFC Playoff Race

Scott Morris | December 26, 2025
Lions playoff hopes after Christmas

The Detroit Lions’ season officially ended on Christmas Day, and it happened in a way that
summed up their entire year. Six turnovers, five of them from Jared Goff, and a 23–10 loss to
the Vikings in Minneapolis shut the door on any remaining playoff hope. Detroit has one game
left on the schedule, but it won’t matter. The Lions are out, and their exit rippled through the
NFC picture in a few meaningful ways.

First, the obvious part. Detroit’s loss clinched a playoff spot for Green Bay. The Packers didn’t
even need to play yet — the Lions did the work for them. Green Bay still has issues to clean up,
especially after losing Jordan Love to a concussion, but the result locked them into the field.
Instead of scoreboard watching for survival, the Packers can now focus on positioning over the
final two weeks.

For Detroit, the game was frustrating because the defense actually showed up. Holding
Minnesota to two touchdowns despite all those turnovers kept the Lions within striking distance
longer than they deserved to be. The offense never recovered. Short fields, giveaways, and
stalled drives turned what was already a slim playoff path into a dead end.

With the Lions eliminated, the NFC North race narrowed quickly. Chicago remains in control at
11–4 and has already clinched a playoff berth. The Bears still have a shot at the No. 1 seed,
and Detroit’s loss removed one more variable from that equation. Chicago closes with games
against the 49ers and Lions, and while the division isn’t officially wrapped up yet, the Bears are
clearly in the driver’s seat.

At the top of the conference, Seattle continues to benefit from chaos. The Seahawks sit at 12–3
and control the No. 1 seed if they win out. Detroit falling out doesn’t directly impact Seattle, but it
removes a potential late-season spoiler that could have complicated tiebreakers. With games
left against Carolina and San Francisco, Seattle’s path is still challenging, but it’s manageable.

San Francisco may be the biggest quiet winner from Detroit’s elimination. The 49ers are 11–4
and now locked into the playoff field, with a real chance to climb even higher. They finish with
Chicago and Seattle, meaning they still have direct influence over the top of the NFC. The Lions
dropping out tightens the race above them, but also removes a fringe team that could’ve played
spoiler late.

The Rams are still in good shape at 11–4, though their margin for error has shrunk. Losing to
Seattle hurt their shot at the top seed, and now they need help if they want to win the NFC
West. Detroit exiting the picture doesn’t help them directly, but it does simplify the math across
the conference.

In the NFC South, Detroit’s loss didn’t move the standings, but it added pressure. Carolina sits
at 8–7, Tampa Bay at 7–8, and that division still looks like it will come down to Week 18. With
fewer wild-card spots in play, the Bucs’ path is now strictly division-or-bust.

For betting and playoff forecasting, Detroit’s loss did one important thing: it reduced uncertainty.
Now, the NFC field is tighter, clearer, and more top-heavy. The final two weeks are less about
who sneaks in and more about who ends up where — and who gets stuck going on the road in
January.

Christmas ended Detroit’s season, but it clarified the NFC race for everyone else.
