Two Week 18 Bets That Make Sense
Week 18 is always strange. Every season, it turns into a guessing game about who’s actually playing, who’s being protected, and which teams still care enough to push for a result. I’ve learned over time that this isn’t the week to chase long explanations or force angles that aren’t there.
Instead, I try to focus on games where the incentives are obvious, and the situation isn’t murky. Right now, there are two of those.
Rams Laying 7.5 Against Arizona
The Rams didn’t do themselves any favors earlier in the week with the loss to Atlanta. That game took the easy path off the table and forced them into a spot where they can’t afford to coast.
If Los Angeles wants to lock in the No. 5 seed, this is the week they have to handle it. Lose here, and the playoff draw gets a lot less friendly. That kind of clarity matters late in the season.
This also isn’t a situation where Sean McVay has to guess. The Rams know exactly what’s at stake, and that usually means starters play and the approach stays aggressive until the game is under control.
Arizona doesn’t match up well in that scenario. The Cardinals have struggled on both sides of the ball down the stretch, and their defense has had a hard time holding up against competent passing attacks. That’s a problem when Matthew Stafford is involved, especially at home, and especially when the Rams are still playing for position.
Stafford has looked comfortable, the offense hasn’t slowed, and there’s no reason for Los Angeles to complicate things here. Get ahead, keep pressure on, and make Arizona prove it can keep up. More often than not, that ends with the Rams pulling away late.
Commanders Getting 7 in Philadelphia
This one is about expectations more than talent.
Philadelphia appears ready to rest most, if not all, of its key players. When that happens, the entire dynamic of the game changes. The playbook shrinks, the pace drops, and the goal shifts from winning convincingly to getting through the afternoon without anyone getting hurt.
Washington doesn’t have that luxury. Even if the season hasn’t gone the way they wanted, this is still a divisional game and a chance to finish strong. A Dan Quinn–coached team isn’t treating this like a preseason scrimmage.
I don’t love Washington as a team in general, but I do like getting a full touchdown when the opponent isn’t fully invested. If the Eagles are rotating players and keeping things basic, the Commanders don’t need to be sharp — they just need to stay within themselves.
Games like this often stay close. One team is managing risk, the other is still pushing, and that’s usually enough to make points valuable late.
Final Thought
Week 18 is less about predicting outcomes and more about reading intentions. The Rams clearly want the result. Philadelphia clearly wants to get to the playoffs healthy. That’s the difference this week, and it’s usually enough.
