Four Out on Black Monday – NFL New Head Coach Odds

Black Monday has come and gone and four NFL head coaches were among the day’s casualties. Arizona’s Jonathan Gannon, Atlanta’s Raheem Morris, Cleveland head coach Kevin Stefanski and the Raiders’ Pete Carroll were all fired by their respective organizations today.
The four firings bring the number of NFL head coaching openings to six. Remember, Tennessee’s Brian Callahan and the Giants’ Brian Daboll were let go during the regular season. The odds on new head coaches for each job are out already. Let the fun begin!
Arizona Cardinals
The big question in Arizona is whether or not the Cardinals will seek another defensive-minded head coach like Gannon. Gannon went just 15-36 in three seasons, including a dismal 3-14 this year.
There are questions about Kyler Murray at quarterback, but the Cardinals have some serious offensive talent with TE Trey McBride and WR Marvin Harrison. If they can figure out the quarterback situation, the offense could be something special.
As it stands currently, Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur is the favorite to earn the job in Arizona. LaFleur and the Rams lead the NFL in scoring, averaging 30.5 points per game. The issue for LaFleur and the Cardinals is one of philosophy.
LaFleur and the Rams are a big 13 personnel (one back, three tight ends) team. Arizona doesn’t exactly have the personnel to run that type of offense. Of course, that could be addressed in the free agent market and with the 2026 NFL draft. Regardless, as it stands LaFleur is a +400 favorite to become the Cardinals next head coach.
It appears the Cardinals may be looking for an offensive-minded head coach. The top five favorites are all currently NFL offensive coordinators.

Atlanta Falcons
The Falcons were so close. Five one-score losses led to an 8-9 season, the Falcons eighth in a row. Morris just couldn’t turn the corner and after consecutive 8-9 campaigns the organization is moving on.
If there is a job out there where a new head coach could make an immediate splash, it’s Atlanta. The Falcons roster is very similar to the roster in Jacksonville and the Jags just finished 13-4 and are on their way to the AFC playoffs.
There is talent on offense with Michael Penix Jr. at quarterback, Bijan Robinson at running back and receivers like Drake London and Kyle Pitts. The defense played well at times, but not well enough. And, don’t forget, the Falcons closed the season with four straight wins, including a huge upset of the Rams.
Before Morris was hired prior to the 2024 season, the Falcons interviewed Seattle offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak. He is from the Kyle Shanahan tree of coaching. Obviously, Kubiak has done well. Seattle earned the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs after averaging 28.4 points per game, which was third in the NFL.
The early odds show Kubiak as the favorite to win this job, but Seattle could make a run to the Super Bowl. That will extend the time frame if the Falcons are truly interested in hiring Kubiak. LaFleur is also among the favorites for the Atlanta job.

Cleveland Browns
Stefanski lasted six seasons in Cleveland and was actually named the NFL’s Coach of the Year twice. The Browns made the playoffs twice under Stefanski, but they regressed the last two seasons, going 3-14 and 5-12. That just wasn’t good enough and Paul DePodesta, the guy that supported the hiring of Stefanski, is no longer with the organization.
Cleveland will move on and the early favorites for the job are defensive guys. They are also more seasoned coaches. The Browns job is not as attractive as some of the others that are open. Younger coaches may be drawn more to Nashville or Las Vegas rather than Cleveland.
That’s why Robert Saleh and Mike McCarthy are the top two favorites in Cleveland. McCarthy is 62 and has been a head coach (a Super Bowl-winning coach nonetheless) in Green Bay and Dallas. He would be the safe option as he is a proven winner.
Saleh, who is 46, went 20-36 before getting fired by the New York Jets after three-plus seasons. He is a defensive wizard and served in his old position of defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers this season. Salehy is the current betting favorite and there have also been some rumbles about current Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz moving up to the head coach position.

Las Vegas Raiders
Former Super Bowl-winning coach Pete Carroll just couldn’t get it done in Las Vegas. The Raiders went 3-14 in Carroll’s only season with the Silver & Black. If you recall, the Raiders hired Carroll on a shorter than normal term. That makes firing him after one season an easy financial decision.
Keep in mind, Tom Brady is a minority owner of the Raiders and he was all for hiring Carroll. He was also in agreement with his firing. The thing to watch in Las Vegas is if the Raiders take a page from the Houston Texans playbook
Houston’s GM is Nick Caserio who was with the Patriots when Brady played there. Houston suffered through a couple one-and-done head coaches – Lovie Smith and David Culley – while they collected draft picks and built a roster. The result has been two AFC South titles and three straight playoff berths.
The Raiders offense was awful this season, finishing dead last in scoring (14.2 ppg). The defense wasn’t much better finishing 25th, allowing 25.4 points per game. It appears that the Raiders might lean toward defense with a roster that is capable.
Brian Flores is the early favorite and he has some ties to Brady. His defenses have been some of the best in the NFL over the past decade and Flores has head coaching experience, going 24-25 as the Dolphins head coach from 2019 to 2021.

New York Giants
After a 9-7-1 initial campaign that included a playoff berth, the New York Giants tired of head coach Brian Daboll. It all went downhill from that first season in 2022. The Giants went 6-11 in 2023 then 3-14 in 2024. Somehow, Daboll managed to keep his job heading into the 2025 season, but not for long.
After a 2-8 start this season, the Giants relieved Daboll of his duties. New York went on to finish 4-13 and, once again, in last place in the NFC East. Now, the work begins on finding Daboll’s replacement.
For the record, since Tom Coughlin resigned after the 2015 season, six different head coaches (two of them interim) have combined to go 55-109-1. That’s a winning percentage of .335. If the Giants want to become relevant, they should take their time to make sure they get the right guy.
The right guy at the moment could be Stefanski. He is actually the betting favorite right now to become the Giants next head coach. He would inherit a pretty solid defense with some young talent as well as an offense with an up-and-coming quarterback in Jaxson Dart.
If the Giants want to take the defensive-minded head coach route, there are some surprising names on the favorites list. One of those is current Baltimore head coach John Harbaugh.

Tennessee Titans
The final team searching for a new head coach is the Tennessee Titans. Along with the Giants, the Titans decided they’d had enough of Brian Callahan. Tennessee went 3-14 in his first season. That was good enough to get the first pick in the 2025 NFL draft, but their pick, QB Cam Ward, had a rough rookie season playing for a guy who was supposed to be a solid mentor of quarterbacks.
With Callahan out, it’s likely the Titans try another head coach with an offensive background. Ward has the talent, but Tennessee must build a roster around him. If it’s going to be an offensive guy, it’s likely the Titans entertain the likes of Nagy, McCarthy, and current Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady. They may also want to interview current Steelers OC Arthur Smith, a former OC in Tennessee.
If they take the defensive route, look for Green Bay defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley and Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula to get a look.
