Washington Expands Player Prop Betting Despite NCAA Pushback

Washington went a different direction than most people expected.

At a time when the NCAA is trying to shut down player prop betting on college athletes, the state decided to expand it instead. That alone makes this one of the more interesting betting developments we’ve seen in a while, especially with how much pressure there’s been to limit these types of wagers.

The new law opens the door for bettors at tribal casinos to place player prop bets on college athletes, including players from in-state programs like Washington, Washington State, and Gonzaga. That’s not something every state is comfortable with right now, which is why this stands out.

What makes it even more notable is the timing. The NCAA has been actively pushing for bans, arguing that props tied to individual players create problems that don’t exist with standard team bets. Their concern isn’t just about integrity; it’s also about what happens off the court.

There’s been a growing number of reports about athletes dealing with harassment tied to betting results. Missed free throws, bad shooting nights, turnovers, things that normally stay within the game are now leading to messages and threats from frustrated bettors. According to NCAA data, a noticeable percentage of athletes, especially in basketball, have already dealt with that.

Washington lawmakers didn’t ignore that. They just didn’t agree with banning props entirely.

Instead, the bill takes a different approach. It allows prop betting, but adds penalties for people who cross the line. Threatening an athlete, coach, or official connected to a game can now lead to criminal charges, along with a ban from betting in the state. It’s more of a “control the behavior” strategy than a “remove the option” one. Whether that works is a different question.

The other piece of this law might actually matter just as much, depending on how you look at it. Washington also expanded how sportsbooks operate within tribal casinos. Before this, you were basically tied to whatever single sportsbook partner a property had.

Now, that restriction loosens up. Multiple operators can be available at the same location, meaning bettors could have access to several major apps instead of just one. That’s a pretty big shift for a market that has been tightly structured around tribal gaming agreements.

It still isn’t full mobile betting statewide. You have to be on tribal land to place a wager. But once you’re there, the experience should feel a lot more like what bettors are used to in larger markets.

Some states have already limited or removed college player props because of the same concerns the NCAA keeps raising. Washington looked at that and basically said there’s another way to handle it. Keep it legal, keep it regulated, and try to deal with the downsides directly.

That doesn’t mean the NCAA is going to back off. If anything, this probably adds more fuel to the conversation. If problems around harassment continue, you can expect even stronger pushes for restrictions at both the state and federal levels.

For now though, Washington isn’t waiting around. It’s expanding options, giving bettors more access, and betting, in its own way, that regulation can keep things under control.

And honestly, the rest of the country is probably watching to see how this plays out.
