AL and NL Cy Young Odds

Baseball season is about to blast off. While there a myriad of bets one can place on the season, an interesting one is always the Cy Young award. This award is awarded to the top pitcher in both the American League and National League.

The Cy Young Award is voted on by members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA). Two writers from each of the 30 Major League Baseball cities (60 voters total, covering both leagues) submit ballots based on their respective league’s pitchers before the postseason begins.

The winners for the most recently completed season (2025) are Tarik Skubal (American League) and Paul Skenes (National League).

2025 Cy Young Winners

AL: Tarik Skubal (Detroit Tigers)

This was his second consecutive Cy Young Award, making him the first AL pitcher to repeat since Pedro Martinez in 1999–2000.

Key Stats: 13–6 record, 2.21 ERA, and 241 strikeouts.

NL: Paul Skenes (Pittsburgh Pirates)

Skenes won the award unanimously in just his second MLB season.

He is one of only three pitchers to win both Rookie of the Year (2024) and a Cy Young within their first two seasons.

Key Stats: 10–10 record, 1.97 ERA (lowest in MLB), and 216 strikeouts.

Skenes’ record of 10-10 is not very good but that was because he plays for the Pirates, a team with notoriously bad offense, low payroll and overall poor performance.

It’s not an easy feat to pick the Cy Young. There is no way of knowing which pitcher will suffer injuries or just have an Off year. You can simply go on what you know. If a player is known for playing through injuries, has always had a relatively low ERA and had a good spring training, then that is a good place to start.
