2026 March Madness has been a Ratings & Gambling Success

Scott Morris | April 2, 2026
NCAA tournament record viewership and sports betting handle

The NCAA tournament is down to its final three games. This encompasses two Final Four Games and one championship game. These games feature UConn vs Illinois and Arizona vs Michigan. These are popular matchups and will command a huge audience and handle at the sportsbook.

This year’s tournament is the most watched NCAA tournament since 1993. According to Yahoo, the tournament is averaging 10.3 million viewers across the four networks carrying games. Viewership is up over 9% from last season.

These tremendous ratings coupled with the ever-growing sports betting market has made for a record number of bets as well. According to the American Gambling Association over $3.3B will have been wagered on both men’s and women’s tournaments when the books close later this month. This doesn’t account for the large offshore sports betting market. The offshore market does not report figures to any central entity, but it is estimated they are handling over a billion dollars in wagers too.

The projected handle is nearly double the $1.76 billion wagered on the 2026 Super Bowl LX, emphasizing the massive scale of the tournament.

Over 40 million brackets have been filled out this tournament. The last remaining perfect bracket among the millions of entries in major contests (including ESPN) was ruined by No. 6 seed Tennessee’s 79-72 win over No. 3 seed Virginia in the second round.

Why Has Interest Been So High in 2026?

Several key factors contributed to this surge in viewership:

Dramatic Early Rounds & Upsets: The tournament began with record-setting viewership for the first two rounds, including a 20% increase in viewership for the First Four. The opening weekend was driven by high-stakes matchups, including VCU’s upset of North Carolina and a record-setting Sunday that featured a combined 19.7 million viewers watching teams like Iowa and St. John’s pull off big wins.

High-Profile Matchups and “Blue Bloods”: The 2026 bracket featured key matchups between traditional powerhouse programs. For example, UConn’s victory over Duke in the Elite Eight was a massive draw, averaging 13.4 million viewers and peaking at 18.9 million, while the East Region was described as a “bracket of death” featuring Duke, UConn, Kansas, and UCLA.

Strong Regular Season Momentum: The tournament’s high ratings followed a successful regular season where major networks saw significant viewership increases (FOX up 38%, CBS up 10%).

Record-Setting Selection Show: The Selection Show also saw its largest audience in 12 years (6.4 million viewers), creating strong momentum heading into the tournament.

Increased Interest in Women’s Basketball: While not the focus of the 10.3M average for the men, the 2025 women’s tournament set its own records, with the final drawing 18.9 million viewers, outpacing the men’s 2024 final. This momentum continued into 2026 with high viewership for top women’s teams.

Overall, a combination of thrilling, unpredictable, and high-scoring games, coupled with the presence of major college basketball brands, drove the record-breaking viewership for the 2026 tournament.
