NBA Title Odds Shift Again After Moves During the Draft
We haven’t even reached free agency yet, and the championship odds already look completely different. That’s what happens when Giannis Antetokounmpo gets traded, and several contenders decide to reshape their rosters before draft night.
If you checked the odds after the Finals and looked again after the draft, you probably noticed one change right away. Oklahoma City has moved ahead of San Antonio as the betting favorite to win the 2027 NBA title. The margin is tiny (+250 compared to +260), but sportsbooks clearly liked what they saw from the Thunder following the draft.
Boston comes next at +650, followed by the defending champion Knicks at +700. That number is interesting because New York just went 16-3 in the postseason and won its first championship since 1973. Jalen Brunson was incredible during the Finals, but oddsmakers clearly believe repeating will be difficult in a league that keeps changing champions every year.
The biggest move came before the draft when Miami acquired Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Heat jumped to +1800, putting them fifth on the board. That is a major change for a team that had been much farther down before the trade buzz started. Miami gave up Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and draft capital, but landing Giannis immediately changed the way sportsbooks view the Heat.
Minnesota also made a loud move by trading for LaMelo Ball. The Timberwolves moved from +3000 to +2200 after the deal, putting them sixth in the championship odds. Pairing Ball with Anthony Edwards gives Minnesota one of the more exciting backcourts in the league, although the roster will look much different after moving Julius Randle and Naz Reid.
The draft itself did not create as much movement at the top. AJ Dybantsa went No. 1 overall, but the biggest odds change from draft night came with Utah taking Darryn Peterson at No. 2. The Jazz moved from +20000 to +18000, which is not a massive shift. Still, it shows sportsbooks do believe Peterson can help raise the team’s outlook alongside Lauri Markkanen, Jaren Jackson Jr., and Keyonte George.
The next group is where things get interesting. Detroit and Denver are both +2500, while the Lakers are +3000. Indiana and Cleveland sit at +4000, followed by Houston at +4500. Those teams are not favorites, but each has enough talent to climb if the offseason breaks right.
There are also some longshots worth watching, though most are more about roster development than immediate title chances. Orlando and the Clippers are both +8000, Portland and Atlanta are +9000, while Charlotte and Toronto are +10000. The Hornets dropped after trading Ball, briefly falling as far as +20000 before settling back at +10000.
The bottom of the board shows just how far some teams are from contention. Milwaukee is now +25000 after trading Giannis, Memphis is +50000, Chicago is +70000, and Sacramento owns the longest odds at +100000.
The biggest takeaway is simple: the West dominates the top of the market. Oklahoma City and San Antonio are clearly the two teams sportsbooks trust most entering free agency. Boston and New York remain dangerous in the East, but Miami’s Giannis trade adds a new layer to that side of the bracket.
Free agency will change the board again. LeBron James, Jaylen Brown, and other major names could shift the market if anything unexpected happens. For now, the Thunder and Spurs are the teams everyone is chasing.
