The Top 5 NFL Defenses Entering the 2026 Season

The NFL has become an offensive league, but the best defenses continue to decide playoff games. Quarterbacks usually grab the headlines, yet the teams making deep postseason runs almost always feature defenses that pressure the passer, force turnovers, and make life difficult for opposing offenses. With training camps about to open, these five units stand out above the rest based on talent, coaching, depth, and the moves they made during the offseason.

  1. Houston Texans

Houston earns the top spot because it checks every box you’d want from a championship defense. Head coach DeMeco Ryans has built one of the league’s most physical and disciplined units. Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter form one of the NFL’s best pass-rushing duos, while Derek Stingley Jr. gives Houston a shutdown corner capable of matching up with any receiver. The Texans have difference-makers at every level, making them one of the toughest matchups in football.

Houston also made an already strong roster even better by adding safety Reed Blankenship and defensive tackle Kaden McDonald. After finishing near the top of the league in several defensive categories last season, there are very few concerns surrounding this group heading into 2026. Until another team proves otherwise, Houston deserves to be No. 1.

  1. Seattle Seahawks

Seattle proved throughout last season that its defense can dictate games against just about anyone. Mike Macdonald has created a fast, disciplined defense that consistently wins at the line of scrimmage. The Seahawks generate pressure without constantly sending extra rushers, allowing the secondary to stay aggressive in coverage. Leonard Williams, Byron Murphy II, and Ernest Jones lead a front seven that is equally effective against the run and the pass.

The Seahawks lost a few veterans during the offseason, but the identity of the defense hasn’t changed. Devon Witherspoon continues to emerge as one of the NFL’s best young defensive backs, and Macdonald has shown he knows how to get the most from every player on the roster. There may be a few new faces, but Seattle has every reason to expect another outstanding defensive season.

  1. Los Angeles Rams

The Rams already had a talented defense before making one of the biggest moves of the offseason. Acquiring reigning Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett immediately changes the outlook for Los Angeles. Garrett joins Kobie Turner and Braden Fiske to create one of the league’s most disruptive defensive fronts. Offensive coordinators now have one more problem to solve every Sunday, and there aren’t many good answers.

The Rams didn’t stop with Garrett. They also upgraded the secondary, giving defensive coordinator Chris Shula more flexibility than he had a season ago. If the new pieces come together quickly, Los Angeles has every opportunity to finish with one of the NFL’s top defenses.

  1. Philadelphia Eagles

Every season, Philadelphia seems to reload rather than rebuild, and the defense is another good example. Vic Fangio continues to put together defenses that force opponents to earn every yard. The secondary features Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean, and Tariq Woolen, giving the Eagles plenty of speed and versatility in coverage. Few teams have as much talent in the defensive backfield.

Up front, Jalen Carter remains the player offenses must account for on every snap. His ability to create pressure from the interior opens opportunities for the rest of the defensive line. If the edge rush develops the way the coaching staff expects, Philadelphia has everything needed to finish among the league’s elite.

  1. Denver Broncos

Denver probably doesn’t receive enough national attention, but the Broncos belong in this group of top 5 defenses. The Broncos lost some depth during the offseason, but defensive coordinator Vance Joseph has repeatedly shown he can maximize the talent on his roster. With Surtain leading the secondary and an experienced front seven returning, Denver has another defense capable of keeping the Broncos in every game they play.

Patrick Surtain II remains one of football’s premier cornerbacks, while Zach Allen and Nik Bonitto headline a pass rush that consistently puts quarterbacks under pressure. Denver finished near the top of the NFL in sacks and points allowed last season, and that aggressive style has become the identity of the defense.

Houston gets the nod entering training camp, but the gap between these five defenses isn’t very large. Seattle, the Rams, Eagles, and Broncos all have the talent to finish near the top of the league, making defense one of the biggest storylines to watch throughout the 2026 season.
