Top 5 Greatest MLB All-Star Game Moments of All Time

The MLB All-Star Game, often referred to as the “Midsummer Classic,” has served as the stage for some of the most legendary feats in baseball history. From towering home runs to dominant pitching displays, these moments have defined generations of fans.

Unlike All-Star games in other sports, the MLB All-Star game is still real baseball. The NFL’s Pro Bowl is now a joke, a collection of skills competition masquerading as an “all-star” game. The NBA gave up playing defense years ago and now the NHL holds a tournament with teams made up of players from different countries.

The only major professional North American sports league that plays an actual game with no gimmicks, with players that actually want to win is Major League Baseball. And there have been some iconic moments from these All-Star games.

As we prepare for the 96th edition of the MLB All-Star game on Tuesday, July 14, at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, it is the perfect time to look back at the five most iconic moments that have shaped the legacy of this event.

1️⃣ Ted Williams’ Walk-Off Blast (1941)

With the American League trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the ninth inning and two runners on base, Hall of Famer Ted Williams stepped to the plate. He launched a towering three-run home run into the right-field stands at Briggs Stadium in Detroit, securing a 7-5 victory for the AL.

This remains the most famous walk-off in All-Star history. Williams was in the midst of his historic season in which he batted .406, and this moment solidified his status as the greatest pure hitter in the game. The image of Williams clapping his hands and skipping toward first base is one of the most enduring visuals in sports history.

2️⃣ Bo Jackson’s Lead-Off Moonshot (1989)

In the bottom of the first inning at Anaheim Stadium, Bo Jackson—the ultimate multi-sport athlete—took a 1-0 pitch from Rick Reuschel and crushed it 448 feet into the center-field bleachers. The sound of the bat was so distinct that even legendary broadcaster Vin Scully was momentarily stunned.

Jackson became the first player to hit a lead-off home run and steal a base in the same All-Star Game. His performance earned him the MVP award and served as the definitive proof that he was not just a football player playing baseball, but a legitimate MLB superstar.

3️⃣ Pedro Martínez Strikes Out the Side (1999)

Pitching in front of his home crowd at Fenway Park, Pedro Martínez delivered perhaps the most dominant pitching performance in All-Star history. He started the game by striking out Barry Larkin, Larry Walker, and Sammy Sosa in the first inning. He then opened the second by fanning Mark McGwire.

Pedro struck out five of the six batters he faced, including three of the greatest power hitters of the era (Sosa, McGwire, and Jeff Bagwell). At a time when offense was at an all-time high, Pedro’s “power vs. power” dominance was a masterclass in pitching efficiency and remains the gold standard for All-Star starts.

4️⃣ Cal Ripken Jr.’s Storybook Home Run (2001)

In his 19th and final All-Star Game, the “Iron Man” Cal Ripken Jr. stepped up in the third inning at Safeco Field. On the very first pitch he saw from Chan Ho Park, Ripken lined a home run over the left-field wall, sending the stadium into a frenzy.

Ripken was named the game’s MVP, becoming the oldest player to win the award at age 40. The moment was made even more special because Alex Rodriguez had famously insisted on switching positions with Ripken before the game, allowing Cal to start one final time at his natural position of shortstop.

5️⃣ Ichiro Suzuki’s Inside-the-Park Home Run (2007)

Playing at AT&T Park in San Francisco, Ichiro Suzuki hit a ball off the right-field wall that took an unpredictable carom. While the outfielder scrambled to retrieve it, Ichiro used his elite speed to fly around the bases, sliding into home for the first—and still only—inside-the-park home run in All-Star Game history.

Ichiro went 3-for-3 in the game and was named MVP. The play perfectly encapsulated Ichiro’s unique skill set: a combination of high-contact hitting, incredible speed, and the ability to capitalize on the unique dimensions of any ballpark.

The 2026 All-Star Game tonight in Philadelphia is set to add to this history, especially with local favorites like Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper looking to create their own legendary moments in front of the home crowd. Cristopher Sanchez, another Phillie, will start the game for the National League. He’ll go up against Toronto’s Dylan Cease, who gets the start for the AL.
