The Top 5 NFL Divisions Entering the 2026 Season
Every NFL season is shaped by divisional games. A strong division forces teams to earn every victory, while weaker divisions can create easier paths to the playoffs. Heading into the 2026 season, several divisions feature Super Bowl contenders, franchise quarterbacks, and experienced coaching staffs that should keep the playoff race competitive from September through January. Based on overall roster strength, quarterback play, coaching, and depth from top to bottom, these are the five best divisions in football entering training camp.
1. NFC North
No division can match the depth of the NFC North entering the new season. All four teams have reasons to believe they can compete for a playoff berth, making every divisional game critical.
Chicago won the division behind Caleb Williams and head coach Ben Johnson, who quickly transformed the Bears into one of the NFC’s toughest teams. Detroit narrowly missed the playoffs after a 9-8 finish but returns Jared Goff, Jahmyr Gibbs, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and one of the league’s strongest offensive lines. Green Bay remains a dangerous opponent with Jordan Love leading the offense, while Minnesota believes Kyler Murray gives the Vikings the stability they have been searching for at quarterback. There is no easy schedule inside this division, and that balance is why the NFC North earns the top spot.
2. NFC West

The NFC West features two of the strongest Super Bowl contenders in football and another team capable of making a deep playoff run.
Seattle opens the season as the defending Super Bowl champion after keeping most of its championship roster together. Mike Macdonald has built one of the NFL’s top defensive units, while the offense continues to play efficient, mistake-free football. The Rams made the biggest move of the offseason by acquiring reigning Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett. Garrett joins Matthew Stafford, Puka Nacua, Davante Adams, and Kyren Williams on one of the NFL’s most talented rosters. With Sean McVay continuing to call the shots on the sideline, Los Angeles has every reason to believe it can make another Super Bowl run. San Francisco also expects to return to contention after battling injuries throughout much of last season, making this one of the league’s toughest divisions every week.
3. AFC West

The AFC West has become much more competitive than it was just a few years ago. Instead of one dominant team, three franchises enter the season with realistic playoff expectations.
Denver earned the AFC’s top seed last season behind one of football’s best defenses and added Jaylen Waddle to strengthen the offense. Kansas City welcomes back a healthy Patrick Mahomes and expects to return to championship form after injuries disrupted last season. The Chargers remain a playoff contender with Justin Herbert and Jim Harbaugh, while Las Vegas begins building around first overall pick Fernando Mendoza under new head coach Klint Kubiak. Few divisions can match the quarterback talent found throughout the AFC West.
4. AFC North

Every season seems to produce another physical battle inside the AFC North, and 2026 should be no different. This division has built its identity on tough defense, experienced quarterbacks, and games that often come down to the final possession.
Baltimore remains one of the conference favorites with Lamar Jackson leading an experienced roster. Cincinnati expects to bounce back with Joe Burrow healthy and an offense capable of challenging any defense. Pittsburgh begins a new chapter under Mike McCarthy while Aaron Rodgers returns for another season, giving the Steelers valuable experience. Cleveland enters the year with plenty of young talent and hopes to surprise a division where every win is difficult to earn.
5. AFC South

The AFC South has quietly developed into one of the league’s most improved divisions over the past two seasons. Jacksonville and Houston have emerged as legitimate playoff contenders, while Indianapolis believes it can challenge if it stays healthy.
Trevor Lawrence enjoyed one of the best seasons of his career under Liam Coen, helping Jacksonville capture the division title. Houston continues to rely on C.J. Stroud and one of the NFL’s better defenses under DeMeco Ryans. Indianapolis has enough talent to stay in the playoff race with Daniel Jones back in the lineup, and Tennessee continues rebuilding around rookie quarterback Cam Ward. The Titans may not be ready to win the division, but the overall talent throughout the AFC South has improved significantly.
Strong divisions often produce teams that are ready for playoff football because they spend the regular season facing quality opponents. The NFC North stands above the rest entering 2026, followed closely by the NFC West. The AFC West, AFC North, and AFC South complete the top five, and each should play a major role in shaping the NFL playoff picture over the coming months.
