Derrick Henry Overwhelming Favorite to Win the Heisman Trophy

December 11, 2015

Alabama’s Derrick Henry the star running back, who for the past five to six weeks has looked unstoppable for the Crimson Tide, is also the overwhelming favorite to win the Heisman Trophy for 2015.

Henry is now sitting at 1 to 10 to win far ahead of the other two finalists, Christian McCaffrey a running back for Stanford at 6 to 1 and Deshaun Watson a quarterback for Clemson at 15 to 1.

Henry has the numbers and his team is preparing for one of the two College Football Playoff semifinals game to be played on December 31.

The Alabama running back leads the nation in rushing attempts with 339, in rushing yards with 1,986 and rushing touchdowns with 23. The powerhouse runner averaged 188.6 yards per games during the second half of the season for the Crimson Tide.

If Henry wins, he will be the first running back, since Mark Ingram another Alabama back won in 2009, to win the award.

Stanford’s McCaffrey was not in the top 10 on the odds makers’ futures boards that often this season for the Heisman.

The versatile runner finished the season with a new record for all-purpose yards with 3,496, which broke the previous record held by Barry Sanders. McCaffrey set the record during the Pac-13 championship tilt.

Watson was another long shot by most analysts to win the Heisman prior to the opening week of the season. The sophomore quarterback has great athleticism but he was ranked behind both Trevon Boykin at TCU and Dak Prescott at Mississippi State when the season began.

Watson however led Clemson to a record of 13-0 by throwing for 5,312 yards with 30 touchdowns and 11 picks. He also ran for 887 yards while scoring 11 touchdowns on the ground.

A dual threat signal caller has won the Heisman five straight seasons, but with the likelihood of Henry winning this season, it appears the quarterback’s hold on the trophy will be broken.

The award will be announced on Saturday December 12.
