Things to be Aware of as the College Football Season Begins

August 31, 2015

The start of the college football regular season is just four days away. There are a number of issues still to be settled by teams including starting quarterbacks, injuries and suspensions to name a few. Teams might have last minute suspension before they open their seasons. Often times coaches are very coy about suspensions for just one game which many times are for positive test for marijuana use during the summer.

Here are a few things to be aware of heading into the first week of the season. Make sure to check injury reports and suspensions prior to making any bets for this week’s games.

  • For those interested in the opener between Nebraska and BYU, remember that both teams have many personnel issues to deal with. Jamaal Williams the BYU star running back left the team, while Steven Richards the team’s starting tight end was lost for the season due to an injury. Even worse, the Cougars will have 10 or more players suspended due to a fight at the end of a bowl game last season versus Memphis. Nebraska has five players suspended for this game. No players names have been released yet but a report from Lincoln says just one starter is amongst the suspended players. De’Mornay Pierson-El a special team’s player and wide receiver could miss eight weeks due to a foot injury. He is an exceptional punt returner who had three touchdowns on punt returns last season.
  • Vanderbilt lost Andrew Jelks an offensive tackle with a knee injury, he was the second starter on offense to go down. The team had already lost C.J. Duncan a wide receiver.
  • Jared Crump a junior wide receiver for Wake Forest will miss the season due to a torn ACL. Last season he caught 32 passes.
  • Oklahoma will have Baker Mayfield as their week 1 starter. He transferred from Texas Tech. The Sooners also have Lincoln Riley as their new offensive coordinator.
  • Florida suspended three of its players for its opener versus New Mexico State. One is on offense and two are on defense. However, the Gators are favored by 36.5 point at home.
