This past weekend there was a flurry of messages sent to us about Betonline.ag being down. We did our investigating and found the site to be down for everyone and tried connecting to them from servers around the world. The Betonline IT were working on the problem throughout the weekend and by the week’s start the site was up and running again.

Today, the management at Betonline confirmed it was indeed a DDos attack. This is basically when a person or persons use computers to launch a massive traffic wave to a website causing its servers to become overwhelmed. They then demand a ransom to stop the attack. We first reported about this type of attack back in 2013.

BetOnline was not alone. The internet has seen a massive increase in these type of attacks this year. According to sources on the web, there are about 100,000 servers that are causing these attacks and are putting the entire internet in jeopardy.

It is best for companies with customer accounts to have mirrors of their sites that they can give to their clients in case an attack occurs. The IT then needs to isolate the origin of the threat and block the region. Usually the attack comes from China, Russia, Indonesia or sometimes even North Korea. So, blocking these countries (in particular) is a healthy idea to begin with. But the technology exists for the attacker to maintain an attack and reroute where it comes from, so it is a very “cat and mouse game” and an unscrupulous one to say the least.
