Portnoy to “Quit Gambling” After Latest Big Loss

November 28, 2023
Dave Portnoy quits betting

The Eagles game vs Buffalo this past Sunday was a wild one to say the least. But it wasn’t a clean one. Just like previous games earlier in the season, the refs seemed to only call it one way. When the Miami Dolphins played at Philadelphia earlier this season, they couldn’t seem to catch a break. They were hit with 10 penalties totaling 70 yards. On the other side of the ball, the Eagles apparently played a perfect game committing 0 penalties. But in fact they didn’t. There is even a semi-famous meme floating around of all the blatant missed penalties by the refs.

This past weekend, Buffalo strolled into Philly as 3 point underdogs. The public was all over Philly. Perhaps it was because they were 9-1 and have one of, if not the best team in the league. Or perhaps it was because they understood that the Eagles seem to be getting special treatment at home this season. Is it possible the refs are trying to make up for shafting the Eagles in the Super Bowl back in February? Anything is possible I guess. There are many conspiracy theories out there about how the NFL is rigged. At SBA, we dont believe the entire league or even most games are rigged, but we have seen enough to think that certain games and teams get special treatment for whatever reason.

Dave Portnoy and the Eagles vs Bills Game

When we caught news that Barstool Sports CEO Dave Portnoy was quitting gambling on sports it wasn’t a shocker. We have heard these claims before, not just from Portnoy, but from every sports bettor who has had a bad week or two. What surprised us was the game which was his so-called breaking point. When we heard it was the Eagles vs the Bills, it simply did not compute. When the Eagles came back in OT and won by a field goal, it was essentially a Push for an overwhelming majority of people who bet on it. In fact, the line was PHI -3 up until 2.5 hours before the game kicked when it moved to Philly -2.5 points. There is no way a guy who has been around sports betting as long as Dave took +2.5 is there? Sadly, yes.

Not only could he have bet the game at any point in the week when it was a KEY Number, but he could/should have bought the half point to take it off that key number. Anyway you slice it, this game should have been a win for anyone who knew what they were doing regardless of which side you bet. Chalk this up to another strange tale of sports betting I suppose. Good luck with everything Dave. The gambling world will welcome you back when you make your return.
