Is Ian Machado Garry the Next Conor McGregor?

Twenty-seven-year-old Irish mixed martial artist Ian David Machado Garry competes in the UFC’s welterweight division. As of this late-April writing, he is 16-1-0 (seven knockouts) in UFC fights and ranked sixth in the division. Garry was a winner (via decision) against Carlos Prates (21-7-0) at Kansas City this past Saturday evening.
As Garry is an Irishman who’s enjoyed success in UFC (winning his first 15 bouts), the ‘next Conor McGregor’ comparison began just about after his 2021 debut (UFC 268) at Madison Square Garden. Add in his nickname of ‘The Future’ and one can see why Garry is in the same orbit as McGregor.
“It’s comparing me to someone who changed the game,” Garry said. “If that’s the comparison. I’m getting, then I’ll take it and run with it, because that’s my plan, change the game.”
McGregor’s been a mentor to his countryman, training together (McGregor hasn’t fought since 2021) and offering insights after each of Garry’s bouts.
With an early background in judo (earning a black belt at 18), Garry had his first mixed martial arts fight at the age of 19 (became a pro at 21).
Ian Garry’s next fight may well be a shot at the welterweight title, meaning he has a keen interest in the May 10th UFC 315 (Montreal) bout between division champ Belal Muhammad and Jack Della Maddalena. UFC CEO Dana White has tabbed Garry as the understudy in that bout.
