How Difficult Is It to Repeat in the NFL?

It will be 60 years of Super Bowls after this 2025 NFL season, so a good time to reflect on those teams that’ve managed to repeat as champions. It ain’t easy, but then it’s not supposed to be.
Having the best record or being favored in NFL Super Bowl championship odds is no guarantee of success in the Super Bowl (cue Joe Namath).
If you’re looking in the history section of NFL news, there’ve been nine instances of repeat title winners in the history of the game. The two editions that began the era were both won by the Green Bay Packers. The Miami Dolphins won Super Bowls VII and VIII, the latter capping the league’s lone perfect season in 1973.
It was the turn of the Pittsburgh Steelers for the next two games (IX and X), then again in Super Bowls XIII and XIV. Next were the San Francisco 49ers (Super Bowls XXIII and XXIV) before the last vestiges of Dallas Cowboys glory in title games XXVII and XXVIII.
Enter the Denver Broncos (Super Bowls XXXII and XXXIII) and New England Patriots (XXXVIII and XXXIX). As the salary cap and free agency really enveloped the league, it was obviously much more difficult to keep these elite teams together.
Nearly two decades before the next repeater, the Kansas City Chiefs of Super Bowls LVII and LVIII. They were summarily denied (by the Philadelphia Eagles) in title game LIX at the Superdome last season, thus no team has ever won three Super Bowls in a row.
Whether those same Eagles can become the 10th team to successfully defend a title remains to be seen. Philly is a touchdown favorite over the visiting Cowboys when the NFL scores count in earnest Thursday evening. Sept. 7th.
While there figures to be much reaction (and overreaction) to the first week of the 2025 season, remember the NFL schedule is the proverbial marathon, not a sprint.
Just sayin’.
Where Is the Super Bowl for the Next Five Years?
As was mentioned, Super Bowl LIX was played in New Orleans when the Philadelphia Eagles emphatically won the championship of the National Football League. Philly was the underdog (though not by much) in NFL Super Bowl championship odds ahead of the game.
Looking at future sites finds Super Bowl LX at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, and LXI at SoFi Stadium (site of the former Hollywood Park in Inglewood, Calif.). It’s off to Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium and Super Bowl LXII, with the sites of subsequent NFL title games unknown as of now
Where Is Super Bowl 2025 Going to Be Located?
Time to put on those big-boy pants as Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, home of the San Francisco 49ers, hosts the 60th Super Bowl. The second title game at the venue, which previously hosted the 50th game back in 2016.
Does BetUS Offer Constant Updates on the NFL Games Betting Lines?
Indeed, it does, since nothing drives the gambling bus in nearly the way it’s driven by the NFL. BetUS is offering a plethora of options (point spreads and props) through the regular season, and ending with NFL Super Bowl odds. Though no football games today, it won’t be long until the start of the 17-game season across the league.
It’s the Buffalo Bills tepidly favored at 13-2 (+650) to win the title as of this late-August writing. Philadelphia is the 7-1 (+700) co-second choice (with the Baltimore Ravens), according to NFL betting odds.
Remember the board is fluid, so the best advice is always to do your homework to try and strike when the ‘odds iron’ is hot.
Any Final Thoughts?
NFL rumors are a never-ending entity, especially when it comes to separating title contenders and pretenders. There’s no shortage of bad opinions out there, so any bettor (serious or casual) is encouraged to come to their own conclusions before (hopefully) finding those winners
