What is a Sugar Huddle?
You may have heard announcers mention the term “sugar huddle” when watching a football game recently. The term caught a great deal of people off guard. It is not a very commonly used football terminology as far as sports announcers concerned but has been around for quite some time. In this article I was to explain what a sugar huddle is and its origin.
A “sugar huddle” is a quick, no-huddle offensive gathering used primarily at or near the goal line (usually inside the 5-yard line) to confuse the defense and prevent them from substituting players. The goal is to “sugar” (sweet-talk or trick) the defense into staying on the field with their base or goal-line personnel, even if they want to sub in different players.
