What is a sugar huddle?

You may have heard announcers mention the term “sugar huddle” when watching a football game recently. The term caught a great deal of people off guard. It is not a very commonly used football terminology as far as sports announcers concerned but has been around for quite some time. In this article I was to explain what a sugar huddle is and its origin.

A “sugar huddle” is a quick, no-huddle offensive gathering used primarily at or near the goal line (usually inside the 5-yard line) to confuse the defense and prevent them from substituting players. The goal is to “sugar” (sweet-talk or trick) the defense into staying on the field with their base or goal-line personnel, even if they want to sub in different players.

Sugar Huddle Origin

The term “sugar huddle” originated in the NFL during the 1980s with the Cincinnati Bengals under head coach Sam Wyche. It was developed as part of their innovative no-huddle offense, which aimed to speed up the game’s tempo and disrupt defensive substitutions.
