World Baseball Classic Odds: USA Leads the Board, but the Tournament Still Feels Wide Open

The World Baseball Classic is back, and it always brings a different energy than a normal baseball tournament. Twenty national teams, rosters filled with major league stars, and a short tournament where a single game can flip everything upside down. That combination makes it fun to watch and even more interesting to look at from a betting perspective.

Heading into the 2026 tournament, the United States sits as the favorite at -110 according to DraftKings. Japan, the defending champion, follows at +350, while the Dominican Republic is close behind at +400. Venezuela is next on the board at +900, and then the odds drop off quickly with Puerto Rico (+2000) and Mexico (+2200) rounding out the next level.

Those numbers tell a pretty clear story. Sportsbooks see three legitimate title contenders and then a group of teams that would need things to break perfectly to win it all.

The United States being favored isn’t shocking. The roster is loaded again with big league talent. Aaron Judge headlines the lineup, and the offense also features stars like Bryce Harper and Bobby Witt Jr. On the mound, the Americans can turn to arms like Paul Skenes and Tarik Skubal. That kind of talent alone is enough to justify the favorite status.

Still, laying -110 in a short international tournament always feels a little uncomfortable. Baseball simply has too much variance. A dominant roster doesn’t guarantee anything when the format only gives teams a handful of games before elimination rounds begin.

Japan is the obvious challenger. The defending champions dramatically won the 2023 tournament when Shohei Ohtani struck out Mike Trout to secure the title. Now they return with another stacked roster that blends major league stars with some of the best talent from Nippon Professional Baseball.

Ohtani is again the centerpiece, but Japan’s strength goes beyond one superstar. Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Yusei Kikuchi, and Tomoyuki Sugano provide serious pitching depth, and the lineup features hitters like Seiya Suzuki and Masataka Yoshida. The Japanese program also has something many teams struggle to replicate in this tournament: continuity and chemistry. These players are used to playing together internationally.

The Dominican Republic is the other team that deserves serious attention. On paper, the lineup might be the most intimidating in the tournament. Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Juan Soto, Julio Rodríguez, Manny Machado, and Fernando Tatis Jr. give the Dominicans a lineup that can overwhelm opposing pitching.

The question, as it often is with the Dominican squad, comes down to pitching consistency. The bullpen looks strong, and Sandy Alcántara anchors the rotation, but depth can become an issue once the tournament reaches the knockout rounds.

Beyond those three teams, Venezuela might be the only other roster capable of pulling off an upset. Ronald Acuña Jr., Luis Arraez, and Gleyber Torres headline a very dangerous offense, and the pitching staff has enough experience to keep games close. Still, the +900 odds (BetUS.com) reflect how difficult the path likely is compared to the top three favorites.

Prediction

When looking at this board, Japan at +350 stands out as the most appealing.

The United States deserves to be the favorite, but the margin between these teams isn’t large enough to justify such a short number in a tournament where a single bad inning can end a title run. Japan offers a better balance between roster strength and betting value.

They already proved in 2023 that they can handle the pressure of the biggest moments, and the core of that championship group is still intact. With elite pitching, strong defense, and the presence of Shohei Ohtani on the biggest stage, Japan has everything needed to make another deep run.

If the tournament plays out anything like the last one, the Americans will be right there at the end again. But from a betting standpoint, Japan at +350 (SportsBetting.ag) feels like the ticket to hold when the final game is played.
