Stanley Cup Odds are not as Clear as They Appear

NHL playoffs stanley cup pick 2026

You can start with the Colorado (+275) if you want, because that’s where most people will anyway. Best record, no obvious weaknesses, everything lines up the way it’s supposed to. And still, it doesn’t really settle anything. That’s kind of the problem this year. The top of the board looks strong, but is it?

Carolina (+425) sits close behind the Avalanche and feels like the type of team that could reach at least the conference finals without much trouble. Tampa Bay (+700) is different. They don’t need to prove anything at this point, and that alone carries some weight once a series gets tight. You don’t really question whether the Lightning can handle the moment.

Vegas (+750) is sitting in that range too, and they always seem to show up once games slow down this time of year. Dallas (+1800) is harder to pin down, but they’re around every year, and that usually means something once the playoffs start.

Then you hit that group where the odds start to bunch together: Buffalo (+1200), Minnesota (+1200), Edmonton (+1200). And this is where it stops being about who had the best season and becomes more about who can actually hold up through four tough series.

Edmonton’s been sitting in this spot for a while. Close enough that you’ve seen what it looks like when it’s working, and also seen how quickly it can fall apart. That part hasn’t really changed. What has changed, or at least feels different, is that they’re not chasing it the same way as before.

Connor McDavid is still the biggest problem any team has to deal with in a series. That hasn’t shifted at all. Oilers’ teammate Leon Draisaitl is right there with him. When you have that, you’re not trying to outplay teams for 60 minutes every night, just waiting for moments, and they usually get them.

The issue is everything around that, and it always has been. You can go back through their playoff runs the last two seasons and find the same things. Goaltending swings, scoring dries up outside the top guys, and one bad stretch flips a series.

However, that’s the part that makes this number interesting. They’re sitting at +1200 (Sportsbetting.ag), not because they can’t win, but because they haven’t finished it yet. That’s a different kind of risk compared to teams further down the board that haven’t even been in that spot.

Montreal (+1600) and Ottawa (+2000) are teams that would need a lot to break right. Not impossible, just a different path. You’re asking more questions with them than you are with a team like Edmonton.

And that’s really what this comes down to. There isn’t a team sitting at the top where you feel completely comfortable just locking it in and moving on. Colorado makes the most sense on paper, sure, but that doesn’t always carry over, just ask the 2022-23 Boston Bruins, who set regular-season records and were knocked out in the first round. Carolina and Tampa Bay are right there, but neither feels like the one.

So you end up looking for a team that doesn’t need everything to go perfectly, and Edmonton fits that better than most.

Not because they’re the safest, but because they don’t need to be perfect to win the Cup.

They’ve already been close enough to know what it takes. If the goaltending holds and they get just enough from the rest of the lineup, that’s all it really comes down to. With that kind of top-end talent, you don’t need much more than that.
