The Dark Side of Same Game Parlays: Why Books Love Them

Scott Morris | May 21, 2026
same games parlays - the truth about them

It wasn’t that long ago where if you tried to place a parlay on both the side and total of a game that you would get a warning message telling you that this action was not permitted. Placing a parlay on the same game was simply outlawed. Your local bookie didn’t mind taking them though. He knew what it took online sportsbooks years to figure out, that the house has the advantage.

Then one day – just like that – sportsbooks woke up and allowed the bet. Not only did they allow it, they forced it down your throat. You couldn’t log into your app without having to clear a pop-up notification informing you that same-game-parlays were now being allowed.

Since the switch, Same Game Parlays (SGPs) have become one of the most popular betting features in the United States. They allow you to combine multiple bets from a single game — player props, team totals, spreads, anytime touchdowns, and more — into one high-payout ticket.

Sportsbooks heavily promote them with big buttons, boosted odds, insurance offers, and dedicated SGP sections on apps like BetOnline, BetUS, DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, and Caesars.

But there’s a reason why sportsbooks love Same Game Parlays so much.

What Makes Same Game Parlays Different?

Unlike regular parlays that combine bets from different games, SGPs focus on outcomes within one single matchup. This creates natural correlations — for example, a quarterback going over passing yards often helps his top receiver go over receiving yards.

Sportsbooks adjust the odds to account for these correlations, but they rarely show you how much extra they’re charging.

The Math: Why SGPs Are So Expensive

  • Straight bets usually carry around a 4.5% house edge.
  • Traditional parlays increase that edge.
  • Same Game Parlays often have a 15% to 35% house edge (sometimes even higher on 4+ leg tickets).

Books don’t simply multiply the individual odds. They add a “correlation tax” that turns -110 legs into the equivalent of -125 or worse. This hidden juice makes SGPs significantly worse value than betting the same props individually.

Real-World Example

You like a star QB Over passing yards + his favorite WR Over receiving yards + Team Over total points.

  • If bet separately, the true combined odds might be +550.
  • The SGP often only pays around +380 to +420.

Over time, that difference eats away at your bankroll.

Why Sportsbooks Love Same Game Parlays

  • Extremely High Profit Margins — SGPs are among the highest-hold products sportsbooks offer.
  • Encourages Bigger, Riskier Tickets — Bettors chase huge payouts, which dramatically lowers their actual win probability.
  • Increases Engagement — Players stay glued to the entire game instead of just one outcome.
  • Easier Liability Management — Books can offer big potential wins while controlling risk better than loose cross-game parlays.
  • Marketing Power — Easy to promote with “SGP of the Day,” boosted parlays, and big-win highlight reels.

The Psychological Trap

SGPs feel smart because they’re built around a “story” (e.g., “Lakers blowout script”). In reality, they multiply negative expectation. Most recreational bettors already lose money on single bets — combining 3 to 5 of them with extra juice accelerates those losses while keeping the experience fun and exciting.

When SGPs Can Actually Make Sense

  • You have a strong edge on multiple correlated props the book hasn’t fully priced in.
  • You’re using a promotional boost that meaningfully improves the odds.
  • You stick to 2-leg SGPs and shop lines between books.
  • You only use them for entertainment with a very small percentage of your bankroll.

For the vast majority of bettors, SGPs are one of the worst long-term values available.

Better Alternatives

  • Bet strong individual player props straight.
  • Shop the best lines across multiple sportsbooks.
  • Focus on lower-hold markets like sides, totals, and derivatives.
  • Use SGPs sparingly and only when boosted.

Bottom Line

Same Game Parlays are fun and exciting, but they are designed to be highly profitable for the sportsbooks — not for you. Understanding the hidden math is the first step to becoming a smarter bettor.
