Predicting the First Five Picks of the 2026 NBA Draft

2026 nba draft predictions picks

Every year, somebody tries to outsmart the draft. A surprise pick happens, a prospect rises at the last minute, and mock drafts get thrown into the trash within the first 15 minutes. But heading into the 2026 NBA Draft, the top of the board appears more settled than usual. While there remains debate over who goes first overall, most league insiders believe the first five picks are beginning to take shape. Based on recent reporting, team needs, and betting odds, here’s how the top of the draft could unfold.

The biggest debate surrounds the No. 1 overall pick. For much of the past year, AJ Dybantsa was viewed as the favorite to go first overall. Recently, however, momentum has shifted toward Kansas star Darryn Peterson, who has reportedly focused his attention on the Washington Wizards and appears increasingly likely to become the first player selected.

If the draft unfolds as many around the league expect, here is how the first five picks could look.

No. 1: Washington Wizards – Darryn Peterson, G, Kansas

Peterson entered the 2025-26 season as the consensus top prospect in the country, and despite battling injury issues during portions of the year, many evaluators continue to believe he is the most NBA-ready player available.

Peterson enters the draft with one of the most polished offensive skill sets in the class. He can get to the basket, make difficult jumpers, and create offense both for himself and those around him. Several reports indicate he has limited his pre-draft process and appears comfortable with Washington selecting him first overall.

For a Wizards franchise looking to accelerate its rebuild, Peterson offers star potential while also possessing the polished offensive game needed to contribute immediately.

No. 2: Utah Jazz – AJ Dybantsa, F, BYU

If Peterson goes first, Utah will happily take Dybantsa at No. 2. Few prospects in recent years have entered the draft with as much hype. Dybantsa led Division I basketball in scoring and combines size, athleticism, and shot-creation ability that NBA teams covet. His ties to Utah are also well documented after spending time playing high school basketball in the state before starring at BYU.

Many scouts believe Dybantsa has the potential to become the best player in this draft class. If that’s true, the Jazz could end up looking back on this selection as one of the steals of the decade despite drafting second overall.

No. 3: Memphis Grizzlies – Cameron Boozer, F, Duke

In many drafts, Cameron Boozer would likely be the favorite to go No. 1 overall. The Duke standout put together a dominant freshman season, winning the Wooden Award while proving capable of impacting games in a variety of ways. Boozer’s combination of size, basketball IQ, rebounding, and offensive versatility makes him one of the safest prospects available.

Memphis appears to be in an ideal position. Rather than facing pressure to choose between Peterson and Dybantsa, the Grizzlies could simply take whichever elite prospect remains. If Boozer is available at No. 3, most league observers expect Memphis to sprint to the podium.

No. 4: Chicago Bulls – Caleb Wilson, F, North Carolina

draft selection Caleb Wilson, F, North Carolina

Wilson may not have entered the season with the same level of attention as the three players above him, but his stock climbed throughout the year. The North Carolina forward averaged nearly 20 points and nine rebounds while showcasing elite athleticism and defensive versatility. His ability to play multiple frontcourt positions has made him one of the most intriguing prospects in the class.

Chicago’s rebuild lacks a true cornerstone player, and Wilson’s upside makes him an appealing option. Many executives view him as a prospect whose best basketball remains ahead of him.

No. 5: Los Angeles Clippers – Keaton Wagler, G, Illinois

The draft could take an interesting turn at No. 5, but Wagler continues to be the name most frequently connected to the Clippers. His rise over the past year has been impressive. Wagler combines size, shooting, and the flexibility to play either guard position. Several reports suggest he has canceled workouts lower in the lottery, a sign that he is comfortable with where he stands.

The Clippers are balancing two priorities. They want to remain competitive while also getting younger. Wagler appears capable of helping accomplish both goals, making him a logical fit in Los Angeles.

Final Thoughts

While draft night always delivers surprises, the first five picks are beginning to take shape. Darryn Peterson and AJ Dybantsa appear destined to occupy the top two spots, while Cameron Boozer, Caleb Wilson, and Keaton Wagler round out what many believe is the strongest group of prospects in the class.

There is still time for trade rumors and late movement to shake things up, but if current reporting and betting markets are any indication, these five players are in excellent position to become the first names called Tuesday, June 23, on draft night.
