US Sportsbooks Will Take a Bath if Team USA Wins World Cup
The World Cup is well under way, and many teams have moved out of the Group of 32. Although soccer is not as popular in the United States as it is in almost every other country in the world, many casual fans tune in for the World Cup.
This means “homers” betting on the home team regardless of the odds. The USA men’s team has never won the World Cup. The world’s best players are not from America. They have fielded competitive teams but none that were favored to win it all.
This year is no different. The States started off the tournament at +6000 odds (60-1), whereas favorites started at +400 and +650 odds. However, after some early success, and the heavy home team action at sportsbooks, the odds have shortened by half to +3000 (30-1) at US facing sportsbooks.
France is currently the overall favorite at +350, and reigning champions Argentina are close behind at +450 odds. If the United States somehow pulls off a miracle win, regional sportsbooks stand to lose millions of dollars. The USA is currently +1200 odds to make it to the finals.
Caesars head of soccer Mark Bickerdike told ESPN over email “The USA’s strong start to the tournament has driven a surge of wagers on them to win outright. They are now firmly our most-backed selection and represent our largest liability. A deep run from the USMNT wouldn’t be ideal for profitability, but it would be hugely positive from an engagement perspective.”
There are a ton of other props involving the USA a person can bet. There are a myriad of player prop bets as well as bets where you can predict which round they get knocked out. Here are those odds:
