What the Early Stanley Cup Odds Tell Us About the 2026-27 NHL Season

NHL favorites for 2027 stanley cup

One of my favorite parts of every offseason isn’t free agency or the draft. It’s seeing the first Stanley Cup odds hit the board. They’re never perfect. In fact, they’re usually wrong. But they give us a pretty good idea of how sportsbooks view every roster before a single offseason move has been made.

The Hurricanes haven’t had much time to celebrate winning the Stanley Cup, yet oddsmakers have already moved on to next season. Carolina enters the summer near the top of the board, but the biggest surprise isn’t the defending champions. It’s Colorado.

Colorado Is the Team Everyone Is Chasing

Colorado opens at +700, and it’s easy to understand why. The Avalanche didn’t win the Stanley Cup, but they probably have the deepest roster in hockey when healthy. That’s the important part.

Health has been the one thing standing between Colorado and another championship over the last few seasons. If that changes, there’s enough scoring, experience, and high-end talent to justify being the preseason favorite. That doesn’t guarantee anything, but Colorado deserves to start the offseason sitting at the top of the odds board.

Carolina Isn’t Going Anywhere

Winning one Stanley Cup is difficult. Winning two straight is even tougher. Carolina begins its title defense at +750, which tells you oddsmakers believe this championship wasn’t a one-year run. The Hurricanes won because they used four talented lines, defended well, and received quality goaltending throughout the postseason.

The roster should look very similar when training camp opens, making Carolina one of the safest picks among the favorites.

Don’t Forget About Vegas

Losing in the Stanley Cup Final usually leaves a bad taste that lasts all summer. Vegas enters next season at +1000 at Everygame sportsbook, and that’s probably right where the Golden Knights belong. This organization has built a reputation for bouncing back quickly. The core is experienced, the front office has never been afraid to make aggressive moves, and there’s every reason to believe Vegas will spend another season near the top of the Western Conference.

There Could Be Value Outside the Favorites

This is where futures betting becomes interesting. Edmonton, Florida, and Tampa Bay all sit between +1100 and +1200, while Minnesota and Dallas aren’t far behind. Dallas might be the most fascinating team on the board. The Stars have contract decisions to make involving Jason Robertson and Mavrik Bourque, and those negotiations could shape the rest of the offseason. Even with those questions, sportsbooks continue to treat Dallas like a legitimate contender.

Detroit also caught my attention. The Red Wings open at +6600 at BetUS sportsbook, despite spending much of last season looking like a playoff team before fading late. That’s a much longer price than several teams Detroit outplayed for large stretches of the year.

The Odds Will Change

If history tells us anything, these numbers won’t survive the summer. Free agency, trades, and the NHL Draft always reshape the betting board. One blockbuster move can send a team from the middle of the pack into the group of legitimate contenders almost overnight. That’s why these early odds are fun to follow. They’re less about predicting who will win the Stanley Cup today and more about identifying which teams might offer value before everyone else catches on.

Colorado deserves favorite status entering the offseason, but Carolina, Vegas, Edmonton, Florida, and Dallas all have realistic paths to competing for hockey’s biggest prize. By the time October arrives, though, don’t be surprised if this board looks completely different.
