2024 Oscars Best Picture Betting Odds

Oscar awards best picture odds - 96th academy awards

The Oscars mean a lot to some people. It’s like their Super Bowl. Some people even get dressed up and have parties. Hey, to each there own, right? LOL

Not as many people celebrate them as once did. According to Statista, viewership for the event has declined dramatically (no pun intended) in the last 9 years. From a total of 43.7 million viewers in 2015 to just 18.7 million viewers last year, the Oscars don’t have quite the following they once did. In 2021, the broadcast had just over 10 million viewers, making it the lowest rated Oscars broadcast in the modern era.

Why Are People Tuning Out?

There are a number of reasons why it is believed people don’t watch the show like they once did. If you asked the Academy, they would claim that its because streaming services have distracted people and its just tougher sledding out there. But, 2015 had just as many streaming services so that reason is bunk.

Some people have grown to think it’s simply a popularity contest and the best film rarely wins anymore. But that argument has been made for decades now and why would that just start to affect ratings in the last 10 years? Remember The English Patient? Yikes.

The most likely reason is because of the political divide which has formed in the country. Many people increasingly see Hollywood as a liberal playground.. as a bubble where everyone within it suffers from same-think. Actors frequently get up on stage and give bloviated speeches containing left-wing diatribes that basically piss off half the country.

Regardless, the Oscars still command enough of an audience for sportsbooks to place official betting odds on the event. The fact that Academy does its best to keep the winner a secret means that the integrity of the betting atmosphere surrounding it is largely intact. However, if I were running a sportsbook, I wouldn’t take any bets on the event from people who reside in the 90210 zip code. Just sayin’.

2024 Oscar Snubs

There will be plenty of complaints that certain films didn’t make the cut. The Killer was a Netflix product featuring Michael Fassbender. The movie was well reviewed but was divisive among its viewers. People and publications complained that is was plodding and dull. They tended to say that they gave up 15 minutes into it. Having seen the movie, I would suggest they hang in there because it picks up a great deal.

The Color Purple is a remake of the 1985 Steven Spielberg project that is now a musical apparently. I thoroughly enjoyed the first one but I DESPISE musicals. This feels like a movie they may very well have chosen to award to show how virtuous they were to their liberal buddies. I’m glad it didn’t make the cut.

Napoleon was a highly anticipated historical drama featuring Juaquin Phoenix. Director Ridley Scott reunited with Phoenix to try to capture some of magic of Gladiator, which they worked on together back in 2000. Well, this one seems to have landed flat. Movie-goers complained that is was boring and focused on all the wrong things, namely Napoleon’s relationship with his wife. Yuck.
