QB Brendan Sorsby Gambling Controversy – Declaring for NFL
Journeyman college QB Brendan Sorsby was busted gambling on college sports, even his own team when he was at Indiana, and now is facing the consequences.
Originally flagged for trying to bet on sports in 2024 by a betting-detection service called Prohibit, Sorsby continued to wager by using proxies. After being caught in March of 2026, Sorsby admitted to placing thousands of bets totaling roughly $90,000+ over several years (high school through college). This included bets on a wide range of sports and events, from obscure ones like Turkish basketball, Romanian soccer, tennis, the MLB draft, and even the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest.
The NCAA has a strict (often described as “zero tolerance”) policy against student-athletes betting on college sports, with especially severe consequences for betting involving their own team or school. They gave him a lifetime ban from playing college sports.
However, Sorsby sued the NCAA earlier this year and a Texas judge granted him a temporary injunction on the ruling by the NCAA. This technically made him eligible to participate this upcoming season.
NCAA and Big 12 Weren’t Having It
The Big 12 worked behind the scenes to pressure Texas Tech and any school even considering letting Sorby play. Basically, financial threats were made, according to various sources. Texas Tech reluctantly told Sorby that it’s over. Sorsby plans to officially withdraw his lawsuit against the NCAA and enter the 2026 NFL Supplemental Draft.
What is the NFL Supplemental Draft?
Most folks know about the NFL Draft that takes place in April of every year. It is quite the production. The supplemental draft isa separate draft help later in the summer for players who were ineligible or did not commit to the April draft.
It was first held in 1977 to accommodate players who miss the regular draft deadline or lose their remaining college eligibility due to:
- Academic issues
- NCAA violations or disciplinary problems (e.g., gambling, as in Brendan Sorsby’s case)
- Other unexpected circumstances
Sorsby’s Accomplishments and Stats
Although Sorsby is associated with Texas Tech in all the news stories, he never actually played for the Red Raiders. He transferred there to escape his past, in a way.
He’s played two years at Indiana and two years at Cincinnati. As a red shirt and regular freshman at Indiana, he had decent numbers:
138-243 for 1,595 yards passing and 15 TD’s to just 5 interceptions.
His next two seasons at Cincinnati were much more productive:
456-725 for 5,615 yards with 45 TD’s to just 12 INT’s. Hee also rushed for over 1,000 yards and 18 TD’s.
However, his teams went just 19-30 overall during his four-year tenure combined, with only one winning season (2025). See all stat lines here
Final Word
Sorbsy is obviously one of the 1-3% of gamblers classified as “problem gamblers” or “gambling addicts”. This is defined by being unable to stop an activity even after or while facing serious negative consequences. If you or someone you love fall into this category call 888-ADMIT-IT
