The Best NBA Draft Classes of All Time: A Deep Dive Into The Top 5

Scott Morris | July 4, 2026
Best NBA draft classes ever

With the 2026 NBA draft now an afterthought, we turn our attention to how this draft class may turn out. How will top pick A.J. Dybantsa pan out? Darryn Peterson? Cameron Boozer? What about some of the sleepers at the end of the first round or even those drafted in Round 2?

Only time will tell. Time has spoken on some of the best draft classes in league history. Which ones were the best?

Ranking the greatest NBA draft classes of all time is more than just counting All-Star appearances. It’s about identifying the moments that shifted the league’s DNA. From the arrival of the “GOAT” in 1984 to the “Chosen One” in 2003, these five classes stand alone for their depth, star power, and championship impact.

1️⃣ The Gold Standard: The 1984 NBA Draft

The 1984 class is widely considered the greatest in history, headlined by the man many call the greatest to ever play the game – Michael Jordan. This draft didn’t just provide stars; it provided the foundational pieces for the NBA’s global explosion in the 1990s.

Jordan, believe it or not, was not the first pick in the 1984 draft. That honor went to Hakeem Olujawon of Phi Slamma Jamma fame at Houston. Olajuwon went on to win two NBA championships with the Houston Rockets. He was the NBA Finals MVP twice and is still the NBA’s all-time leader in blocked shots (3,830). The modern big man emulates the footwork of Olajuwon, who was an extremely athletic 7-footer.

Jordan would go on to redefine the game of basketball. After hitting that game-winning shot in the 1982 NCAA championship game, Jordan would become the third overall pick in the ‘84 draft. The Chicago Bulls selected the former North Carolina star who would go on to change the game.

The Bulls won six NBA championships with Jordan leading the way. Jordan won five NBA MVPs and was the NBA Finals MVP in each of his six trips to the Finals. He also won 10 scoring titles and is the only player in NBA history to win the league’s MVP, a Finals MVP, the Defensive Player of the Year, and the Rookie of the Year during his career.

Jordan and Olajuwon weren’t the only two studs in the ‘84 draft class. Charles Barkley, the fifth pick, won an NBA MVP in 1993. Listed at 6-foot-6 but probably closer to 6-4½ , Barkley was one of the most dominant rebounders the game has ever seen.

And, let us not forget the 16th pick that year. That was a guy named John Stockton. All he did was become the NBA’s all-time leader in assists (15,806) and steals (3,265). In all, the 1984 NBA draft class produced four of the NBA’s 75 Greatest Players.

2️⃣ The 1996 NBA Draft: The Culture Shifters

If the 1984 NBA draft built the league, 1996 gave it its modern flair. This class was defined by high-scoring guards and versatile wings who bridged the gap between the Jordan era and the modern day.

If you remember anything about the ‘96 draft, it was because it’s the year Kobe Bryant was selected right out of high school. He was not the top pick and didn’t go until No. 13. However, he wound up winning five NBA championships and ended his career as the NBA’s 4th all-time leading scorer.

The first overall pick in the ‘96 draft was a 6-foot point guard who was also a very good high school quarterback. That was Allen Iverson, who would win four scoring championships and the 2001 NBA MVP award.

Four picks later, the NBA got one of its greatest shooters of all time – Ray Allen. Allen won two NBA titles and was selected an NBA All-Star 10 times. Ten picks later, it was Steve Nash, who became a two-time MVP, an 8-time All-Star, and left the game as one its best-ever three-point and free throw shooters of all time.

In addition, 1996 also gave us a number of other draft picks that went on to become All-Stars numerous times. Those players include Jermaine O’Neal, Peja Stojakovic, and Stephon Marbury. If anything, the ‘96 NBA draft redefined the shooting guard and point guard positions.

3️⃣ The 2003 NBA Draft: The “Chosen” Generation

The 2003 draft arrived with more hype than perhaps any other, centered around a high school phenom from Akron, Ohio. It lived up to every bit of its billing, producing multiple franchise-altering stars.

Obviously, the most memorable pick was No. 1 – LeBron James. Drafted by his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers, James would win four NBA championships, four MVPs and become the NBA’s all-time career leading scorer. A future Hall of Famer, James will play his 24th season next year, but not with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Also among the top-5 picks in 2003 was Carmelo Anthony (No. 3), Chris Bosh (No. 4), and Dwyane Wade. Anthony, who played collegiately at Syracuse, finished his NBA career as a top-10 all-time scorer. Bosh, Wade, and James would eventually become teammates in Miami where they won two NBA titles.

Wade would win three NBA championships and an NBA Finals MVP in 2006, which is considered one of the greatest Finals performances in league history. Bosh won two titles with Wade and James in Miami. Bosh was also an 11-time NBA All-Star. Just those three players alone make the 2003 NBA Draft one of the best in history.

4️⃣ The 1958 NBA Draft: The Foundation of Dominance

While often overlooked by younger fans, the 1958 draft introduced the players who would define the first era of NBA superstars and the legendary Lakers-Celtics rivalry. The first pick in the ‘58 draft was Elgin Baylor, one of the game’s greatest scorers.

Baylor was considered ahead of his time. In 1961-62, Baylor averaged 38.3 points per game. It’s the fourth-highest single-season scoring average in NBA history. True basketball fans will know the name Hal Greer, who was the 13th pick in the 1958 draft. He was a 10-time All-Star who won an NBA title with Philadelphia in 1967.

The pick most won’t know is Guy Rodgers, who was born in Philadelphia and played most of his NBA career with the Philadelphia and then San Francisco Warriors. Rodgers was a territorial pick, which were picks that NBA franchises could use on players from their respective areas. The idea was to help build local support for NBA teams. Rodgers was a four-time All-Star who was the NBA leader in assists and steals twice.

5️⃣ The 1987 NBA Draft: The Defensive Juggernauts

The 1987 class was built on grit, defense, and high-IQ basketball. It produced two of the greatest “Robin” players in history who eventually became “Batmans” in their own right.

The top pick in the ‘87 draft was the “Admiral” himself, David Robinson. The 7-footer out of the Naval Academy won two NBA championships, the 1995 league MVP, 10 All-Star nods, and was the 1995 NBA Defensive Player of the Year.

Scottie Pippen went at No. 5 and helped Jordan win six NBA titles. Pippen was a 10-time All-Defensive Team selection. When talking about great NBA perimeter defenders, Pippen is usually the first name on the list.

Kevin Johnson was the seventh pick of the Suns and became one of the most explosive scoring guards of the early 1990s. Johnson was a three-time All-NBA selection and won the 1989 NBA Most Improved Player award.

One of the most clutch shooters in NBA history was Reggie Miller, who went with the 11th pick in 1987 to Indiana. He played his entire 18-year NBA career with the Pacers. When he retired in 2005, Miller was the NBA’s all-time leader in made threes. While Miller and Johnson contributed more on the offensive end, the ‘87 draft’s legacy is the defensive play of players like Robinson and Pippen who changed how the game was coached.
